2024 Free Agents - Stanley Umude

Summary
Umude was not a well-known prospect coming into the 2022 draft, and he went undrafted before eventually just signing a 10-day contract with the Pistons in February of 2023. He then signed a two-way contract with Detroit for the '23-'24 season, which was converted to a standard contract near the end of the season.

At 6'6", Umude has decent size for a wing. If you combine his NBA and G-League 3-point attempts, he has hit 35%, which is slightly below average. He has shown some scoring ability, but his playmaking for others needs work, as he has a negative assist to turnover rate and his assist rate overall is really low.

At 25 years old, Umude is not really a young prospect either. He showed some nice flashes in '23-'24 for the Pistons, but overall still has more to prove if he wants to stick in the NBA.

Cap Considerations
Umude has a $2.1 million team option for '24-'25, and if that is declined he will be a restricted free agent with a $2.3 million cap hold and Qualifying Offer, and the Pistons will have his Early Bird rights. There's also a chance that the Pistons do not give Umude a QO, which would make him an unrestricted free agent.

If the Pistons re-sign Umude using the Early-Bird Exception, they could offer him a starting salary of up to 105% of the average salary this past season (roughly $13 million), which should be more than enough to retain him. If it weren't, and they wanted to retain him, they would simply exercise his option anyway.

Since Umude will only have two years of service, he will be subject to the Gilbert Arenas provision if he is given a QO. This means that any offer sheet he signs with a team besides Detroit can have a starting maximum salary of $12.9 million, but the third and potentially fourth years of that contract can have a large jump (up to the max). His cap hit would then be the average salary over the life of the contract. If the Pistons match, they could choose for his cap hit to either be his actual salary per season or the average over the life of the contract, provided the average fits within the Early Bird Exception or cap space.

I do not expect the Arenas provision to come into play for Umude, as I think any offers for him would fit within the full Non-Taxpayer MLE over the length of the contract. It's most likely that he's an unrestricted free agent with only minimum offers, and he may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.

Potential Teams: Pistons, Cavaliers, Heat, Rockets, Magic

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.1 million (non-guaranteed) with the Pistons

Actual Contract: 1-year, Two-way contract with the Bucks

Umude was unable to get a standard contract, as expected, and ended up signing a two-way contract with Milwaukee.
