Summary

In '17-'18, Maker's second season in the NBA, he appeared to have starting-level potential, playing consistent rotational minutes throughout the season, and even briefly performing well in the playoffs. However, Maker fell out of the Bucks' rotation during the '18-'19 season, and was traded to Detroit. Maker has been unable to make much of a impact in Detroit, and I think the most likely scenario is that Maker is playing on a "make-good" minimum contract next season.

It's unclear whether Maker can develop to the point where he contribute positively to winning. Maker's shot has not developed enough for him to be a real threat from outside, and that ability to stretch the floor as a big will be his defining offensive trait. On defense, Maker has a solid block rate but his slight frame makes it very difficult to be a good rebounder.

Cap Considerations

Maker will be a restricted free agent with a $10.7 million cap hold and a $4.6 million Qualifying Offer. The Pistons are unlikely to offer the $3.5 million QO and make Maker a restricted free agent.

Although the Pistons will likely not need the additional cap space gained by renouncing him, Maker would likely sign the $4.6 million QO if it were offered to him, as that is more than he would get on the open market. As such, Maker will almost certainly become an unrestricted free agent. The Pistons could still bring Jones back using cap space, the Room Mid-Level Exception, or on a minimum contract.

For other teams, Pistons will be available no matter what the cap situation is for that team, as his salary will likely only be for the minimum, and if not, would certainly fit within any of the Mid-Level Exceptions.

Potential Teams: Rockets, Pistons, Raptors, Thunder, Hornets

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.7 million ($1.6 million cap hit) with the Rockets

Actual Contract: 1-year, $1.7 million (non-guaranteed) with the Cavaliers.

Maker only got a non-guaranteed minimum contract, but it looks lke he could stick around on the roster.
