2022 Free Agents - Patrick Beverley
Summary
At 34 years old as a free agent in 2022, Beverley likely will only be looking at modest short-term offers. He is no longer a starting-level guard, but could still provide solid backup play. While not known as a shooter due to his relatively low volume of attempts, Beverley has shot 39% or better from three each of the past six seasons. Since Beverley is not much of a ball-handler or play-maker, his best role is next to a ball-handling wing who can carry the load on offense. That allows Beverley to spotup from three, particularly from the corners where he is especially effective.
The feisty guard was at one point known as one of the better perimeter defenders in the league, but has declined in that area in recent years. He can still compete on that end, but his excessive fouling, which often leads to teams getting in the bonus sooner and free throws on non-shooting fouls, might negate most of the value that he provides on that end, especially considering he has lost a step as he has aged.
Cap Considerations
Beverley will be an unrestricted free agent with a $21.5 million cap hold and full Bird rights. As his cap hold exceeds the salary he will get in free agency, his cap hold is not really relevant. If the Timberwolves re-sign Beverley, his cap hold will be replaced by his starting salary, and the Timberwolves may still have some cap space available depending on his salary and what happens with their other free agents. There's also a chance that the Timberwolves operate over the cap in 2022 and retain their own free agents while having the full Non-Taxpayer MLE and the Bi-Annual Exception to add players.
If Beverley demands a starting salary of more than the full $10.1 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him, unless a sign-and-trade is worked out. It is possible that Beverley could be had for the full MLE or less.
Potential Teams: Timberwolves, Nets, Hornets, Bulls, Nuggets
Predicted Contract: 2-year, $15 million with the Timberwolves
Actual Contract: 1-year, $13 million with the Timberwolves
Beverley signed a one-year extension during the '21-'22 season, and will now hit free agency in 2023 rather than 2022. Based on what Beverley's market was looking like in 2022, I thought he did well with this extension.
