2022 Free Agents - Bruno Fernando
Summary
Fernando has yet to show much during his first three seasons, and he could find himself out of the league soon. His feel for the game is lacking, as he doesn't pass well out of the post or as the roll man. He doesn't have the ability to stretch the floor, as he has also only hit six of the 41 threes that he has attempted.
Fernando hasn't been able to earn any sort of consistent minutes this season, playing in less than 100 non-garbage minutes, according to Cleaning the Glass, and the majority of those came late in the season when the Rockets were in tank mode.
On defense, Fernando doesn't have great size or athleticism, and hasn't been able to provide rim protection. I wouldn't expect Fernando to get much interest as a free agent, and expect him to be in the G-League or overseas in 2022-2023.
Cap Considerations
Fernando will be a restricted free agent with full Bird rights and a $2.2 million cap hold and Qualifying Offer. However, the Rockets may not tender him a QO, making him an unrestricted free agent. If a player has a smaller cap hold than his starting salary, his team can use cap space to sign-free agents before using Bird Rights to re-sign its own free agents. Since the Rockets will likely not have cap room, Fernando's cap hold will not play a factor.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Fernando as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE to sign him to an offer sheet. There's also a chance that Fernando ends up settling for the minimum. However, Fernando being a restricted free agent could lower his interest among teams, as they will worry that the only way to pry him away from Houston would be to overpay him. Most likely though, Fernando will be an unrestricted free agent with only minimum offers.
Potential Teams: Nuggets, Rockets, Heat, Thunder, Bulls
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.9 million (non-guaranteed) with the Nuggets
Actual Contract: 1-year, $1.9 million (non-guaranteed) with the Rockets
As expected, Fernando was unable to get a fully-guaranteed contract, and signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Rockets, which was later converted to a two-way contract.
