2024 Free Agents - O.G. Anunoby

Throughout his career, Anunoby has gone from a great physical prospect with limited skills, to a solid 3-and-D role player, to slightly more than that offensively while being one of the best defenders in the NBA. Teams that already have their lead ball-handler figured out are always looking for guys like Anunoby to complement their stars, and Anunoby has accordingly got lots of interest from other teams in trades in recent years. Let's start with the defense, because that is where Anunoby shines the brightest. At 6'8 with a long wingspan and strong build, Anunoby is one of the most switchable defenders in the NBA. He has the size and strength to defend all but the most giant of centers, while also having the perimeter quickness and lateral mobility to defend guards on the perimeter. There's not many guys in the league you would want defending the best of the best in an isolation situation. He is also disruptive off the ball, posting great steal and block rates and overall being a good help defender.  Offensively, Anunoby is a career 37% 3-point shooter. He's particularly deadly from the corners, hitting over 43% from there over the last five seasons. The vast majority of those are open spot-up opportunities, but Anunoby has developed his off-the-dribble game in recent years as well. He's not someone you want handling the ball a ton or running pick-and-roll, but he can attack closeouts and get in the lane. He can back down smaller players to get short shots inside. He struggles from midrange but has always finished well at the rim. He hardly gets any assists, but his vision and play-making has improved in recent years.  Despite all that he brings to the table, Anunoby hasn't made an All-Star team, and really has never seriously been in the conversation to make one, let alone an All-NBA team. He has also only made one All-Defense team, partly due to healthy reasons and missing games, and it was 2nd team in '22-'23. Obviously he has the potential to be an elite role player that could take a good team into championship contention, and we some glipses of that in '23-'24 when the Knicks were awesome with Anunoby in the lineup, but paying near max money for someone like that can make it really difficult to build out the rest of the roster.

Summary

Anunoby has a $19.9 million player option for '24-'25, and if he declines that option he will be an unrestricted free agent with a $28 million cap hold and full Bird Rights, meaning the Knicks will have no restrictions on re-signing him. Depending on how close the Knicks are to the luxury tax after free agency, if Anunoby is brought back by the Knicks on a multi-year contract they could benefit from frontloading his contract, as it could give them additional flexibility in the future. Since Anunoby's starting salary will be above the $12.9 million Nontaxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him. If Anunoby and an above-the-cap team have mutual interest, a sign-and-trade could be worked out.

Cap Considerations

Jerami Grant (4+1 years, $160 million, 2023) Tobias Harris (5 years, $180 million, 2019) Andrew Wiggins (3+1 years, $109 million, 2022)

Player/Contract Comparison

Potential Teams: Knicks, Rockets, Thunder, 76ers, Pistons

Predicted Contract: 4-year, $150 million with the Knicks

Actual Contract: 5-year, $212.5 million (5th year player option, trade bonus) with the Knicks

Anunoby got $5 million more per year than I projected, plus an extra year, a player option, and a trade bonus.
