2024 Free Agents - Damian Jones

Summary
Jones reunited with the Lakers in the summer of 2022, as he spent a couple 10-day contracts with the Lakers in '20-'21 season, but they ended up signing Andre Drummond in the buyout market and chose not to sign Jones for the remainder of the season. However, his reunion was not all that successful. and he was traded to Utah in the Russell Westbrook trade. In '23-'24 he barely played any real minutes for the Cavs, losing the third center minutes to Tristan Thompson.

Jones is a lob threat on offense, and not much else. However, if he gets an open lane to the rim where he can show off his athleticism, he can absolutely posterize defenders. His 83% shooting at the rim in '21-'22 was at the top of the league, according to Cleaning the Glass. That hasn't continued over the past two seasons, as he has only hit 68% at the rim, but the sample size is small.

If Jones can develop a more polished offensive game by increasing his range, setting better screens, or learning to pass out of the short roll, he could become a high-level backup center.

Defensively, Jones hasn't learned to use his big body to be a real rim protector inside, and his rebounding numbers leave a lot to be desired. However, he has consistently posted above-average steal and block rates.

It's not certain that Jones will have any guaranteed offers, but it's possible. Jones is already 28 and will be close to 29 when he hits free agency in 2024, so he's likely on the downside of his career. Some teams may view him as a decent third center option when guys are injured.

Cap Considerations
Jones will be an unrestricted free agent with a $2.1 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. Since the Cavaliers will most likely be operating over the salary cap, they will retain Jones's Early Bird rights until he is re-signed or signs elsewhere. The Cavaliers could offer Jones a starting salary of up to 5% more than the average salary (likely around $13 million) using the Early Bird exception, which should be more than enough should they wish to bring him back.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Jones as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that he only gets minimum offers, and may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.

Potential Teams: Bucks, Cavaliers, Clippers, Grizzlies, Nuggets

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $3 million (non-guaranteed) with the Bucks
