2024 Free Agents - Kessler Edwards

Summary
After being selected in 44th in the 2021 NBA Draft, Edwards signed a two-way contract with the Nets and was one of the bright spots in a disappointing '21-'22 regular season for the Nets. Due to injuries and Covid absences, Edwards played in 45 games, started 23 games, and received over 900 minutes of non-garbage time, according to Cleaning the Glass. However, his minutes dropped significantly in '22-'23 and he was traded to Sacramento, where he did not get consistent minutes over the course of the past season and a half.

Edwards operated as a low-usage wing playing next to the Nets' stars. While he struggled to finish at the rim, he did hit 36% from three - not quite as good as the 39.5% he hit during his college career at Pepperdine, but still solid, and that has continued in Sacramento, but the sample size was small. He hit 40% from three on 80 attempts in the G-League in '22-'23. Kessler plays hard on both ends, and has the size and athleticism to guard multiple positions. He posts good steal and block rates.

The evolution in Edwards' game will need to come from his off-the-dribble game, as he really doesn't have much of that ability yet. He doesn't need to become a pick-and-roll operator or someone that you run isos for, but if he can more effectively attack hard closeouts and make a play when he has an advantage, that would help him in becoming someone that can be a legitimate rotation player on a good team, rather than just a regular season innings-eater.

Edwards is still only 23 years old, so it's reasonable to expect some additional improvement, even if the lack of minutes he has received recently is discouraging.

Cap Considerations
Edwards will be a restricted free agent with full Bird rights and a $2.4 million cap hold and Qualifying Offer. The Kings may refuse to tender him a QO, making him an unrestricted free agent.

If a player has a smaller cap hold than his starting salary, his team can use cap space to sign-free agents before using Bird Rights to re-sign its own free agents. If Edwards re-signs for a starting salary above his cap hold, the Kings could take advantage of this rule. However, since the Kings are unlikely to operate under the cap, they likely won't be able to take advantage of this rule.

Depending on how close the Kings are to the luxury tax after free agency, if Edwards is brought back by the Kings on a multi-year contract above the minimum they could benefit from frontloading his contract, as it could give them additional flexibility in the future.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Edwards as even teams without cap space could likely use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him to an offer sheet (although you rarely ever see offer sheets for less than the full Non-Taxpayer MLE), or outright as an unrestricted free agent. There's also a chance that Edwards only gets minimum offers, especially if he's an unrestricted free agent, and he may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.

Potential Teams: Jazz, Kings, Wizards, Celtics, Hawks

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.2 million ($2.1 million cap hit) with the Jazz

Actual Contract: 1-year, Two-way contract with the Mavericks

Edwards was unable to get a standard contract, and signed a two-way contract with Dallas.
