2024 Free Agents - Joe Ingles

Summary
Ingles had quite the season in '20-'21, shooting 46% from three and finishing with an elite eFG% of 65.7%. He finished 2nd in Sixth Man of the Year, but I thought he should have won. Ingles has consistently been a high-level three point shooter, hitting 41% for his career, and over the course of his career he developed his game by launching them more frequently, and even doing so off-the-dribble. Ingles tore his ACL in January of 2022, but bounced back in '22-'23 with the Bucks, hitting 41% from three and moving decently, and had a solid '23-'24 season with Orlando.

Ingles has real craft in the pick-and-roll, developing good chemistry with bigs over the years. He uses the pass-fake with great effectiveness, and that kind of craft allows him to be effective finishing inside despite not having much athleticism. He was consistently one of the better passers on the Jazz, and I think you could even make the argument he was their best passer. With the Bucks he utilized those passing and play-making skills to give Milwaukee some extra ball movement, and has done the same for the Magic.

On defense, Ingles not great but he has always been better than people give him credit for. However, he has lost a step as he has aged, and after tearing his ACL, it's likely he will continue to regress even further when he returns from that injury. He could get targeted on that end deep into the playoffs.

As a free agent in 2024 Ingles will already be nearing 37 years old, so I would be surprised if he got any significant long-term offers. In '23-'24 for the Magic, Ingles shot well from outside but struggled from two, which is typical of aging wings. He played less than 9 minutes per game in the playoffs.

Cap Considerations
Ingles has an $11 million team option for '24-'25, and if the Magic declines that option he will be an unrestricted free agent with a $13.2 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. Using his Non-Bird Rights, the Magic could offer him a starting salary of $13.2 million. They could theoretically offer him more than $13.2 million using cap space. However, that shouldn't be an issue considering if they want to retain him and he plays well enough to warrant that kind of money, they can just exercise the option.

If Ingles hits free agency and demands a starting salary of more than the full $12.9 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him, but it's possible that he could be had for the full MLE or slightly less, including the Taxpayer MLE of $5.2 million, which would make him available to almost every team. There's also a chance that he only gets minimum offers.

Potential Teams: Mavericks, Magic, Lakers, Timberwolves, Bulls

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $3.3 million ($2.1 million cap hit) with the Mavericks

Actual Contract: 1-year, $3.3 million ($2.1 million cap hit) with the Timberwolves

Ingles signed a minimum contract with Minnesota, where he reunited with former Jazz teammates Rudy Gobert and Mike Conley.
