2024 Free Agents - Skylar Mays
Summary
Mays was selected 50th in the 2020 NBA Draft, and spent the first two seasons of his career in Atlanta, but spent most of his time in the G-League. Over the course of the last two seasons, Mays has been with the Trailblazers but still has not been able to get many NBA minutes, although his 371 non-garbage time minutes in '23-'24 was by far a career high, according to Cleaning the Glass, although most of those came on a very bad Trailblazers team, and they didn't even like him enough to keep him around.
Mays is a skilled combo guard, but just doesn't have a single great skill to hang his hat on. He shoots below average from three at 32%. He has shot well from midrange, allowing his overall efficiency to be decent. Mays has some ball-handling and creation ability, but isn't a great passer or someone that can make a ton of plays for others. Defensively, he has the size to guard either guard position but is probably too small to guard many wings. If he can increase his efficiency from outside or just make more productive plays, he could become a decent role player.
Cap Considerations
Mays was waived by the Trailblazers and later signed a two-way contract with the Lakers. Mays will be an unrestricted free agent with a $2 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the Lakers could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $2.7 million. If that isn't enough, the Lakers could use their Mid-Level Exception, if available, to re-sign Windler if he demands more than $2.7 million.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Mays as even teams without cap space could use the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Mays only gets minimum offers again, and he may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Potential Teams: Hornets, Lakers, Bulls, Wizards, Pistons
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.2 million (non-guaranteed) with the Hornets
Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.2 million (non-guaranteed) with the Timberwolves
Mays ended up signing a non-guaranteed contract with Minnesota, and will likely start the season in the G-League, as he probably won't make the final roster.
