2024 Free Agents - T.J. McConnell

Summary
McConnell is one of the best steal maestros in the NBA, as he has consistently been near the top of the league in steal rate, highlighted by a league-leading 3.1% steal rate in '20-'21. He even had a 10-steal game that season. His ability to get steals in the backcourt was unparalled until Jose Alvarado joined him at that table recently.

On offense, McConnell's lack of scoring ability can hurt him. He did post a career high 59% true shooting in '22-'23, thanks to 64% finishing at the rim and a solid 41% from 3, albeit on very low volume. Those numbers continued at a similar rate in '23-'24. Sometimes the defense knows he wants to kick out off of drives and stays home instead of helping, which can lead to turnovers if he tries to kick out in passing lanes that aren't there.

McConnell does have a very good short midrange game, but that's about all he has in the scoring department. That can make his playoff contributions slightly deflated compared to his regular season impact. If teams are ready for his backcourt pressure, and can lock down on his drive-and-kick game, I think he can even become a negative on the court because of his lack of shooting ability. However, he was very good in the 2024 playoffs, being more aggressive and having some big scoring games.

McConnell has shown he can provide solid backup point guard minutes, and even if his minutes can sometimes be limited in the playoffs, he can still provide value to a winning team. He will be 32 years old as a potential free agent in 2024, so he could start to regress as he ages closer to his mid-30s.

Cap Considerations
McConnell's $9.3 million salary for 2024-2025 is only $5 million guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Pacers will have no form of Bird rights on him.

If McConnell becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or possibly even the Taxpayer MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him.

Potential Teams: Pacers, Suns, Wizards, Timberwolves, Jazz

Predicted Contract: Not waived: $9.3 million

Actual Contract: Not waived: $9.3 million

McConnell was retained, as expected, and will hit free agency in 2025 unless he agrees to an extension before then.
