2024 Free Agents - Kelly Oubre

Summary
Oubre's struggles in '20-'21 with the Warriors were well-documented, as he started out ice cold from three and just never really fit in with how they wanted to play. While he played slightly better as the season went on, he still finished with only a 32% hit rate from three. To make matters worse, he didn't shoot well from anywhere else on the court, other than being slightly-above at the rim, according to Cleaning the Glass. Thus his 50% eFG% was well below average.

With Charlotte, Oubre shot a little better at 33% from three, but he did so on high volume, and he overall can get hot and swing games. He has also taken fewer midrange jumpers, and since he didn't excel in that area, it has helped his overall efficiency. Oubre had a really hot start to the '23-'24 season for the 76ers, but since cooled off a bit after missing some time with an injury suffered from being hit by a car, and finished the season at 31% from three.

Oubre is an athletic wing that can score at multiple levels and do so off the catch and off the dribble. His athleticism and willingness to run makes him a solid transition player, which he has been able to take advantage of in Charlotte. However, Oubre has never been the most cerebral player, and that particularly came to light in Golden State, as he didn't learn how to fit in to the high-IQ, ball movement-heavy offense that the Warriors like to execute.

Oubre's long wingspan makes him disruptive on defense, as he has consistently posted good steal and block rates. However, he has never focused enough on that end to be a legitimate defensive talent.

Oubre is a solid wing that has some positional versatility. He's probably overmatched as a starter on a good team, but can be a solid 6th-8th man, and you can never have too many wings.

Cap Considerations
Oubre will be an unrestricted free agent with a $2.1 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the 76ers could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $3.6 million. This should be enough to retain Oubre, since he settled for the minimum to come to Philadelphia. Alternatively, the 76ers could use cap space or their their Mid-Level Exception or Bi-Annual Exception (if available) to re-sign Oubre if he demands more than $3.6 million.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Oubre as even teams without cap space could possibly use the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or possibly even the Taxpayer MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also possible that Oubre only gets minimum offers again.

Potential Teams: 76ers, Magic, Kings, Bulls. Timberwolves

Predicted Contract: 2-year, $20 million with the 76ers

Actual Contract: 2-year, $16.4 million (2nd year player option) with the 76ers

Oubre re-signed with Philadelphia for the Room Mid-Level Exception, which I think is solid value for the scoring wing.
