2024 Free Agents - Troy Brown

Summary
Coming out of college, Brown was seen as having some combo-guard playmaking potential, but that hasn't materialized in the NBA. Brown shows flashes of that playmaking ability, and overall shows a decent feel for the game, but just hasn't been able to put it all together. He started the majority of the games for the Lakers in '22-'23, but was not in the regular playoff rotation, and was not trusted with consistent minutes in Minnesota before being traded to Detroit at the 2024 trade deadline.

Brown is a 35% career three-point shooter, but he doesn't shoot them at a high volume, and those have essentially all been spot-up attempts. Brown has changed his shot profile to replace most of his midrange attempts for threes, which is good considering he wasn't effective from midrange, but he's still not a great outside shooter either. He shot a career high 38% of his threes for the Lakers in '22-'23, but struggled on two-pointers and therefore his true shooting was around average at 56%.  If he can continue to shoot as well as he did for the Lakers, he could stick around as a wing that may not be great at any one skill, but good at a lot of things. In '23-'24, Brown shot 36% from three but just 42% from two, but on a fairly small sample size.

Brown finished well at the rim earlier in his career, but was dreadful in that regard in '21-'22, hitting only 51% of his attempts. That improved to 63% in '22-'23, which is still below-average for his position. He only hit 44% at the rim in '23-'24 but the sample size is really small. Brown also just doesn't quite have the off-the-dribble creation ability to get there consistently.

At 6'7", Brown has the size to defend multiple positions, and that malleability can be helpful, but he still needs to improve his play to warrant him getting consistent minutes. Brown is still only 24 years old, so he could still develop even if major strides are unlikely.

Cap Considerations
Brown's $4 million salary for 2024-2025 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Pistons will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so, as his contract was above the minimum.

If Brown becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If Brown is waived and clears waivers, his value will likely have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum.

Potential Teams: Pistons, Heat, 76ers, Warriors, Suns

Predicted Contract: Not waived: $4 million
If waived: 1-year, $2.6 million ($2.1 million cap hit) with the Heat
