2025 Free Agents - AJ Green
Green was not a high profile prospect coming out of the 2022 NBA draft, and after going undrafted he signed with the Bucks on a two-way contract. He got a little bit of time, playing just under 300 minutes of non-garbage time across 28 games as a rookie in '22-'23, according to Cleaning the Glass, and played slightly more than that in '23-'24 at just over 500 minutes over 49 games. Green's value is as a shooter, as he has shot 43% from 3, and the vast majority of his field goal attempts are 3-pointers. He also shot over 40% from 3 in the G-League on high volume. Green is not just a standstill shooter, as he can come off screens and hit movement jumpers. He's a little undersized for a wing at 6'4", which could hurt his ability to shoot over defenders, and he could be targeted on defense due to his lack of size and athleticism. Green will already be nearly 26 years old as potential free agent in 2025, so he's not a young prospect, which limits his upside a bit.
Summary
Green's $2.3 million salary for 2025-2026 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Bucks will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so, as his contract does not fit within the minimum salary exception as it was for three years. If Green becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If Green is waived and clears waivers, his value will likely have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum, and may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Cap Considerations
Svi Mykhailiuk (4-3 years, $15 million, 2024) Seth Curry (1 year minimum, 2024) Sam Merrill (Non-guaranteed salary not waived, 2024)
