2025 Free Agents - Andre Jackson

After helping UConn win a national championship in 2023, Jackson entered the NBA draft and was selected in the 2nd round at 36th overall by the Bucks. The box score numbers don't pop off the page, but Jackson has been a winner since he was in high school, where he won multiple state championships. Jackson is a smart player that makes winning plays, which is why the win-now Bucks prioritized him in the draft.  Jackson is a really good athlete with a strong frame at 6'6" with a nearly 6'10" wingspan. He'll dunk you, and had some monster dunks in his rookie season. Jackson has a high motor and consistently plays really hard. Defensively, he has the potential to be a high-level NBA defender. He has enough quickness to move laterally and defend on the perimeter. He also has really good feel as a help defender and overall team defender. With his wingspan and leaping ability, he can provide some secondary rim protection.  Offensively, Jackson needs to improve his shooting and ball-handling to be a scoring threat. However, he has good feel as a passer, and is a great cutter. Having that cutting ability could give him some gravity even if his outside shot doesn't develop. He's not going to bog down an offense, as he makes the right plays and keep the ball moving. With his athleticism, he should be a good transition threat.  Jackson will be 23 years old in 2025, which is a little bit on the older side for someone finishing their second season. He got more minutes than expected as a rookie, even getting some playoff minutes, so it will be interesting to see if he gets more minutes in '24-'25. Jackson has even shot efficiently, albeit on a small sample size. I would expect the Bucks to keep him around at least for one more year, and would either hit restricted free agency in 2026 or unrestricted free agency in 2027.

Summary

Jackson's $2.2 million salary for 2025-2026 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Bucks will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so, as his contract was for more than two years. If Jackson becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If Jackson is waived and clears waivers, his value will likely have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum.

Cap Considerations

Ricky Council IV (2nd year non-guaranteed minimum not waived, 2024) Josh Minott (3rd year non-guaranteed minimum not waived, 2024) Caleb Houstan (3rd year non-guaranteed minimum not waived, 2024)

Player/Contract Comparison

Potential Teams: Bucks, Grizzlies, Warriors, Bulls, Hornets

Predicted Contract: Not waived: $2.3 million
