2025 Free Agents - Charles Bassey

Bassey was an elite high school prospect whose college career did not go as planned, as he had a productive freshman year at Western Kentucky but returned to college and tore his ACL as a sophomore. He had a good junior year but still ended up only being drafted in the late second round by Philadelphia in 2021. Bassey's athleticism jumps off the page, as uses his length and jumping ability to block shots and finish lobs. He runs the floor hard and has decent hands. He also has a decent midrange game. His feel for the game could use some work, as he doesn't have any sort of passing feel, evidence by his high turnover rate early in his career. To be an effective pick-and-roll threat in the NBA, he'll need to at least be able to kick to the opposite corner as the roll man or just find the open man when he's doubled down low. Defensively, he can protect the rim and has posted really high block rates, but doesn't move all that well laterally, so defending in space will be tough for him. He's likely going to be limited to playing deep drop coverage.  Bassey gave the Spurs some decent minutes in the '22-'23 season, finishing well at the rim and earning a multi-year contract with his play. He still has more to prove to really stick around in the league, but he's still only 24 years old and has improved each season. Unfortunately, Bassey tore his ACL in December of December and missed the vast majority of the '23-'24 season.

Summary

Bassey will be an unrestricted free agent with a $2.3 million cap hold and Full Bird rights, meaning the Spurs will have no restrictions on re-signing him. If a player has a smaller cap hold than his starting salary, his team can use cap space to sign-free agents before using Bird Rights to re-sign its own free agents, so the Spurs can take advantage if they end up operating under the cap. However, it's unlikely this will come into play, as Bassey would need to demand more than the minimum as a free agent. If Bassey is brought back by the Spurs on a multi-year contract that is above the minimum, they could benefit from frontloading his contract, as it could give them additional flexibility in the future. Doing so would not cost them any cap space because of his low cap hold. If Bassey becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that he only gets minimum offers, and he may not even geet fully-guaranteed offers.

Cap Considerations

Bruno Fernando (1 year minimum, nonguaranteed, 2024) Orlando Robinson (1 year minimum, partially-guaranteed, 2024) Thomas Bryant (1 year minimum, 2024)

Player/Contract Comparison

Potential Teams: Kings, Spurs, Bucks, Pelicans, Grizzlies

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.5 million (non-guaranteed) with the Kings
