2025 Free Agents - Thomas Bryant

Bryant has typically been a highly efficient scorer, shooting really well at the rim, above-average from midrange, and even knocking down a small number of threes at a decent rate. He overall has really nice touch, and uses that to finish well inside despite not being super bouncy or someone that is going to finish over and through defenders in the post. The questions for Bryant really come at the defensive end. The Wizards were 26th in defensive rating in '18-'19, and dead last in '19-'20, which were Bryant's healthy seasons in Washington. The Lakers were not good defensively with Bryant on the court in '22-'23 either, although it should always be noted that defensive rating is a team stat and not an individual stat. While Bryant's individual defensive metrics aren't quite that bad, they don't suggest that he can be excused for his team's defensive struggles either. Unless Bryant can prove that he can anchor an average defense, I'm not sure he can be a reliable player on a good team. Bryant suffered a torn ACL early in the '20-'21 season, and due to the delayed start to that season it caused him to miss the majority of the '21-'22 season as well. Bryant ended up settling for a minimum contract with the Lakers in 2022, and was buried on the Nuggets' bench in the playoffs after being traded to Denver mid-season. He signed another minimum contract with the Heat in 2023, and played a little in '23-'24 but didn't make a big impact. Bryant will be nearly 28 years old as a free agent in 2025, so he's no longer a young player that you would expect to make significant strides.

Summary

Bryant will be an unrestricted free agent with a $2.3 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. The Heat could offer Bryant a starting salary of up to 5% more than the average salary (likely around $13.5 million) using the Early Bird exception, which should be more than enough should they wish to bring him back. Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Bryant as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also possible that he only gets minimum offers.

Cap Considerations

Mason Plumlee (1 year minimum, 2024) Drew Eubanks (2-1 year, $10 million, 2024) Jaxson Hayes (1+1 year minimum, 2023)

Player/Contract Comparison
