2025 Free Agents - Alex Caruso
Caruso developed from a fun story, into a legitimate rotational piece for a championship team, into one of the best perimeter defenders in the league. The Lakers would sometimes even close games with Caruso on the floor because of his impact, and the Bulls would often do the same as well. I would be surprised if he didn't close some games for the Thunder in '24-'25. Caruso hits shots at a solid level (38% 3-point shooter for this career), hustles like crazy, and plays great defense both on and off the ball. He has an elite steal rate, a good block rate, and rebounds really well on the offensive end for a guard. He has great hands when digging down as a help defender, and can read passing lanes for interceptions. As an on-ball defender, he moves his feet extremely well, staying in front of ball-handlers in isolations, and does a good job of fighting through screens. Caruso doesn't have any in-between game, as all of his shot attempts essentially come at the rim or from three. While that certainly helps his numbers (59% true shooting in '22-'23 and 61% in '23-'24), it does limit his ceiling a bit as an offensive player. With the few midrangers he does take, he hits them at an extremely low rate (although we saw some improvement in '23-'24). When teams can take away the most optimal looks, Caruso can't create decent looks for himself. However, Caruso is not exactly someone you want with the ball in his hands and the shot-clock winding down anyway, so that skillset isn't required for his role. Caruso will already be 31 years old as a free agent in 2025. However, he has only gotten better in recent years, and I wouldn't expect much regression on his next contract, and if so it would likely be just at the very end of a long-term deal.
Summary
Caruso will be an unrestricted free agent with a $18.8 million cap hold and full Bird Rights, meaning the Thunder will have no restrictions on re-signing him. Since the Thunder will most likely be operating over the cap, his cap hold is not really relevant. Since Caruso's starting salary will most likely be above the $14.1 million Nontaxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him. If Caruso and an above-the-cap team have mutual interest, a sign-and-trade could be worked out.
