2025 Free Agents - Dante Exum
While Exum showed some potential early in his career, particularly during the 2018 playoffs as a perimeter defender against James Harden, he just wasn't able to stay healthy, and thus was not able to live up to the hype he had when he was drafted fifth overall in 2014. Exum missed his entire second season due to injury, and only played in 96 games from 2017-2021 before spending the '21-'22 and '21-'22 seasons outside of an NBA roster. However, Exum was a revelation for the Mavericks in '23-'24. He probably won't continue to shoot 50% from 3 (he only shot 21% in the playoffs, on a very small sample size though), but that shot-making makes him much more playable. Exum never fully developed his skills enough to become a threat on the ball. While he has some real quickness, it only works in straight-line drive situations because he never developed his ball-handling enough to be able to use that athleticism to actually get by defenders. Now that he can hit shots, he can operate more as an off-ball player offensively. Exum has decent vision, but the actual execution of his passes doesn't match that vision, partly due to his inability to create off-the-dribble as previously mentioned. However, he has actually shown improvement in this area as well since returning to the league, and turned the ball over less. While playing the previous two seasons overseas, Exum showed some growth in his weaknesses, particularly hitting threes at a really good rate, which carried over to the Mavericks in '23-'24. Combining that improved offense with some of the high-level defense we have seen from him in the past, he could stick around in the NBA.
Summary
Exum will be an unrestricted free agent with a $4.1 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. Since the Mavericks will be operating over the salary cap, they will retain Exum's Early Bird rights until he is re-signed or signs elsewhere. The Mavericks could offer Exum a starting salary of up to 5% more than the average salary (likely around $13.5 million) using the Early Bird exception, which will be more than enough should they wish to bring him back. Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Exum as even teams without cap space could use the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or possibly even the Taxpayer MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. There's even a chance that Exum only gets minimum offers.
