2025 Free Agents - Anthony Gill
The Wizards signed the overseas veteran in 2020 to provide some depth at forward, but Gill has been unable to make much of an impact, getting spot minutes here and there but not being a consistent part of the rotation. Those minutes increased slightly in '21-'22 and '22-'23, but declined in '23-'24. After playing mostly center in '21-'22, he played mostly power forward in '22-'23 next to Kristaps Porzingis or Daniel Gafford in two-big lineups. Statistically, nothing really pops out for Gill. He has some ability to stretch the floor, but has hit less than 30% of his threes on a small sample size. He does have enough off-the-dribble ability to attack closeouts, which is helpful for a stretch big. Gill has some overall feel for the game and a knock for making the right play, but I don't think he is anything more than replacement-level, at best. His poor rebounding numbers and inability to protect the rim make it more difficult to play him at center. His block and steal rates are really low. Gill is already 32, so there's also not a ton of upside or expectation for improvement at this point. He can likely be a solid veteran that can fill a 14th or 15th roster spot, but most teams would probably rather use those spots on younger players with more upside.
Summary
Gill's $2.5 million salary for 2025-2026 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Wizards will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, any team could claim him off waivers as his salary fits within the minimum salary exception. If Gill becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If Gill is waived and clears waivers, his value will likely have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum, and he may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Cap Considerations
Bruno Fernando (1 year minimum, non-guaranteed, 2024) Charles Bassey (1 year minimum, 2024) Orlando Robinson (1 year minimum, partially-guaranteed, 2024)
