2025 Free Agents - Tim Hardaway Jr.

Hardaway's primary skill is his scoring, and he has carved out an over-decade long career as a solid rotation player, and often even a starter. He averaged as much as 18 points per game back in '18-'19, and hasn't averaged below 14 points per game since 2016. He's a good outside shooter, hitting 36% of his 3-pointers for his career, and just under 38% of his 3-pointers with the Mavericks from 2019-2025. He can hit shots off movement, and has enough on-ball juice to hit shots off the dribble as well. It's easy to say without context, especially in today's heavy-analytics NBA, that a player should just continuously up his 3-point volume, but Hardaway might be one where this really does make sense. Hardaway has never been a super efficient player, posting about average true shooting rates. He can hit midrange jumpers, but isn't elite in that area and probably takes more than he should. As a below-average NBA athlete, he has never gotten to the rim very often and has been an inconsistent finisher throughout his career, which is unlikely to improve as he ages into his mid-30's. Hardaway doesn't really do much else besides score. He has posted low assist rates, and is a below-average defender. The latter has really hurt his playoff viability. He can get beat off the dribble, and isn't always locked in as a defender either on the ball or off. He hardly gets any blocks or steals, and is a poor rebounder for a wing. He was injured during the Mavs' 2022 Conference Finals run, and during their 2024 Finals run his minutes were much lower than the regular season and he had a bunch of DNPs. Hardaway will be 33 years old as a free agent in 2025, so he is on the down-swing of his career. If he can continue to hit shots at a good rate, he could stick around for a bit as a solid rotational player.

Summary

Hardaway will be an unrestricted free agent with a $24.3 million cap hold and full Bird Rights, meaning the Pistons will have no restrictions on re-signing him. As Hardaway's cap hold exceeds the salary he will get in free agency, his cap hold is not really relevant. If the Pistons re-sign Hardaway for more than the minimum, his cap hold will be replaced by his starting salary, cutting into the Pistons' cap space. If Hardaway is brought back by the Pistons on a multi-year contract above the minmum, they could benefit from frontloading his contract as it could give them additional flexibility in the future. Doing so would cut further into their cap space though. Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Hardaway as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or possibly even the Taxpayer MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also possible that Hardaway only gets minimum offers.

Cap Considerations

Taurean Prince (1 year minimum, 2024) Luke Kennard (1 year, $9 million, 2024) Landry Shamet (1 year minimum, non-guaranteed, 2024)

Player/Contract Comparison

Potential Teams: Clippers, Nuggets, Bucks, 76ers, Magic

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $3.6 million ($2.3 million cap hit) with the Clippers
