2025 Free Agents - Richaun Holmes

After signing for a modest two-year contract in 2019, Holmes played really well for the Kings, becoming their starting center. He turned that play into a sizeable 4-year, $47 million contract in the summer of 2021, but since then it has been all downhill for Holmes. He essentially fell out of the rotation in '22-'23, and was traded as a salary dump to Dallas in the summer of 2023, and again to Washington in 2024. Although he started some games in Washington, those games were pretty meaningless, and he has done little to rehab his overall value. Holmes is athletic enough to be a good lob threat, and he also has really nice touch on his floater. He shot 58% from floater range in '20-'21, which was in the 92nd percentile for his position, according to Cleaning the Glass, and while that dipped to about 55% over the subsequent two seasons, those numbers are still really good. He finishes well at the rim, hitting over 70% from there for his career, but the numbers have declined in recent seasons. Holmes has solid instincts as a roller, knowing how to time his movements in order to stay in the passing pocket. He also has been an above-average offense rebounder each season of his career, per Cleaning the Glass.  On defense, Holmes blocks shots at a really good rate, but isn't a high-level rim protector, partly due to being undersized for a center at 6'10". His defensive numbers aren't bad, as opposing teams tend to shoot worse at the rim with him on the court than when he sits, but I'm not sure that's reflective of Holmes's defense. Holmes has generally been on teams that are very bad defensively. While Holmes isn't the sole person to blame, it certainly doesn't reflect well on his ability to protect the rim.  Holmes will already be 31 years old as a potential free agent in 2025. If he can get back to near the level he was playing a couple years ago, he could be a decent backup center. The days of him being a starting-level player are behind him though, and if he doesn't turn things around soon he could be out of the league.

Summary

Holmes' $13.3 million salary for 2025-2026 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Wizards will have no form of Bird rights on him. If Holmes becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could likely use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Holmes only gets offers for the minimum, and may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.

Cap Considerations

Mason Plumlee (1 year minimum, 2024) Eubanks (2-1 years, $10 million, 2024) Bruno Fernando (1 year non-guaranteed minimum, 2024)

Player/Contract Comparison

Potential Teams: Pelicans, Clippers, Wizards, Bucks, Grizzlies

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $3.6 million (non-guaranteed) with the Pelicans
