2025 Free Agents - Al Horford
When Al Horford left Boston in 2019 to sign with Philadelphia, it looked like his career was going downhill. He didn't pair with Joel Embiid as well as expected, and the 76ers were disappointing overall before they traded him to OKC. Horford had a renaissance upon his return to Boston, and was a big part of them making the Finals in 2022 and ultimately winning a championship in 2024. He is a skilled big who can operate out of the high post and facilitate some offense with his passing skills as a release valve and secondary playmaker. He can stretch the floor on offense simply by spotting up or operating as a pick-and-pop big. He posted a career high 65% true shooting in '23-'24, hitting 42% from 3 and 75% of his shots at the rim, according to Cleaning the Glass. He may not finish as well on a team with less spacing than the Celtics have, as he doesn't have the same athleticism at this stage of his career. The majority of Horford's shots now come from 3, but as long as he continues to hit at a high rate, he'll be providing value offensively. On defense, Horford is not the quickest guy laterally, so he's not great defending on the perimeter, but he's a really smart defender and overall knows where to be, which is often more important than having quickness and athleticism. It's also not like he's a turnstyle out there, as he can survive and will hold up in most scenarios when being asked to defend in isolation. It's actually quite incredible how good he was defensively in the 2024 playoffs considering his age. At age 39 as a free agent in 2025, Horford's career may be nearing an end soon, but he has shown that he can still be a valuable contributor to a great team.
Summary
Horford will be an unrestricted free agent with a $18.1 million cap hold and full Bird Rights, meaning the Celtics will have no restrictions on re-signing him. Since the Celtics will most likely be operating over the cap, and since his cap hold exceeds his likely starting salary, his cap hold is not really relevant. For other teams, if Horford demands a starting salary of more than the full $14.1 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him, unless a sign-and-trade is worked out. However, it's likely that Horford could be had for the full MLE or slightly less, including possibly the $5.7 million Taxpayer MLE, which would make him available to almost every team. At his age, it wouldn't be surprising if he signed for the minimum, if it was the right situation.
