2025 Free Agents - Joe Ingles
Ingles had quite the season in '20-'21, shooting 46% from three and finishing with an elite eFG% of 65.7%. He finished 2nd in Sixth Man of the Year, but I thought he should have won. Ingles has consistently been a high-level three point shooter, hitting 41% for his career, and over the course of his career he developed his game by launching them more frequently, and even doing so off-the-dribble. Ingles tore his ACL in January of 2022, but bounced back in '22-'23 with the Bucks, hitting 41% from three and moving decently, and had a solid '23-'24 season with Orlando. Ingles has real craft in the pick-and-roll, developing good chemistry with bigs over the years. He uses the pass-fake with great effectiveness, and that kind of craft allows him to be effective finishing inside despite not having much athleticism. He was consistently one of the better passers on the Jazz, and I think you could even make the argument he was their best passer. With the Bucks he utilized those passing and play-making skills to give Milwaukee some extra ball movement, and did some of the same for the Magic. On defense, Ingles not great but he has always been better than people give him credit for. However, he has lost a step as he has aged, and suffered from some injuries. He could get targeted on that end deep into the playoffs. As a free agent in 2025 Ingles will already be nearing 38 years old. In '23-'24 for the Magic, Ingles shot well from outside but struggled from two, which is typical of aging wings. He played less than 9 minutes per game in the playoffs, and it will be interesting what kind of role he has in Minnesota during '24-'25.
Summary
Ingles will be an unrestricted free agent with a $2.3 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the Timberwolves could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $4.4 million. This may be enough to retain Ingles, since he settled for the minimum to come to Milwaukee. Alternatively, the Timberwolves could use their Mid-Level Exception or Bi-Annual Exception (if available) to re-sign Ingles if he demands more than $4.4 million. Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Ingles as even teams without cap space could possibly use the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Ingles only gets minimum offers again, and may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Cap Considerations
Matt Ryan (1 year minimum, non-guaranteed, 2024) Patty Mills (1 year minimum, 2024) Eric Gordon (1+1 year minimum, 2024)
