2025 Free Agents - Ty Jerome
Jerome came into the league as an accomplished point guard that won a championship with Virginia in 2019 . As a late first round pick in 2019, there were hopes that Jerome could develop into a high-level backup point guard, if not a starter. However, Jerome has struggled throughout his first early seasons in the league, and is looking more like a fringe rotation player at best. The biggest issue for Jerome is his inability to create separation off the dribble. Without that, he just isn't able to make plays for himself or others. He can make some plays out of pick-and-roll, and can hit pullup midrange jumpers at a decent rate. He shot 73% from the rim in '22-'23, and 38% from three, which are solid numbers. Jerome has decent size for a guard at 6'5" (although he plays smaller than that listing), so he can play more of a secondary role spotting up, but he still needs to continue to hit shots at a better rate in that role. Defensively, Jerome works hard as an on-ball defender but is a little overmatched from an athleticism perspective. He isn't the most quick laterally, and is on the thinner side as well, so he can get bullied by bigger stronger players, and simply get bumped off his spot to allow separation. Jerome's career is in question at this point. If he can't show he can be at least a reliable third point guard that can adequately fill minutes during the regular season, his time in the NBA could be nearing an end. I was surprised he got an above-minimum contract from Cleveland in 2023, but he barely played at all in the '23-'24 season, getting only 15 minutes of non-garbage time, according to Cleaning the Glass. Jerome will be nearing age 28 as a free agency in 2025, so he's not a young prospect either.
Summary
Jerome will be an unrestricted free agent with a $3.4 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. Since the Cavaliers will be operating over the salary cap, they will retain Jerome's Early Bird rights until he is re-signed or signs elsewhere. The Cavaliers could offer Jerome a starting salary of up to 5% more than the average salary (likely around $13.5 million) using the Early Bird exception, which will be more than enough should they wish to bring him back. Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Jerome as even teams without cap space could use the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Jerome only gets minimum offers, and he may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Cap Considerations
