2025 Free Agents - Ty Jerome
Jerome came into the league as an accomplished point guard that won a championship with Virginia in 2019 . As a late first round pick in 2019, there were hopes that Jerome could develop into a high-level backup point guard, if not a starter. Jerome struggled throughout his first early seasons in the league, but is having a breakout '24-'25 season with the Cavaliers thus far. Jerome has shown an improved ability to create separation off the dribble, and is hitting shots at a high level this year. He can make plays out of pick-and-roll, and can hit pullup midrange jumpers at a decent rate. He is shooting a great 57% from two and 45% from three in '24-'25. Jerome has decent size for a guard at 6'5" (although he plays smaller than that listing), and he can play more of a secondary role spotting up, especially if he continues to hit shots at a high rate. Defensively, Jerome works hard as an on-ball defender but is a little overmatched from an athleticism perspective. He isn't the most quick laterally, and is on the thinner side as well, so he can get bullied by bigger stronger players, and simply get bumped off his spot to allow separation. Jerome has shown he can be a reliable third guard that can adequately fill minutes during the regular season. Jerome will be nearing age 28 as a free agency in 2025, so he's not a young prospect, but has shown he can be a good rotation player.
Summary
Jerome will be an unrestricted free agent with a $3.4 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. Since the Cavaliers will be operating over the salary cap, they will retain Jerome's Early Bird rights until he is re-signed or signs elsewhere. The Cavaliers could offer Jerome a starting salary of up to 5% more than the average salary (likely around $13.5 million) using the Early Bird exception, which should be enough to bring him back. Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Jerome as even teams without cap space could possibly use the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or possibly even the Taxpayer MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him.
