2025 Free Agents - Luke Kornet
Kornet has been a solid regular season player for the Celtics over the past couple seasons. He played over 900 non-garbage time minutes in '23-'24, according to Cleaning the Glass, and proved to be a serviceable big that can take on minutes either as a regular back-up, or a third center that can fill time when others are injured. After shooting 37% from three over the first two seasons of his career, Kornet has actually has stopped taking 3-pointers, but is finishing decently enough at the rim to have a respectable eFG%.  As a skinny, slow-footed big, his defensive limitations are a problem. He has become famous for the "Kornet contest", but it's still unclear how effective that is, and even if it is, it's not difficult for others to replicate. Kornet is already 29 years old, so most teams would probably prefer to take a flyer on a younger prospect with one of their final roster spots. However, he has given the Celtics some decent minutes at times, so he could continue to fill a similar role going forward.
Summary
Kornet will be an unrestricted free agent with a $2.3 million cap hold and full Bird Rights, so the Celtics will have no restrictions on re-signing him. Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Kornet as even teams without cap space could likely use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also possible that Kornet only gets minimum offers, and he may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Cap Considerations
Mason Plumlee (1 year minimum, 2024) Drew Eubanks (2-1 year, $10 million, 2024) Bruno Fernando (1 year minimum, non-guaranteed, 2024)
