2025 Free Agents - Maxwell Lewis

Lewis rose up draft boards during his Sophomore year at Pepperdine, and even had lottery pick buzz for portions of the season. However, his draft stock slid back down as the season went on, particularly due to concerns about his effort and ability to impact games outside of scoring. He was picked by the Lakers with the 40th pick in the 2023 draft, and those concerns are still valid a year into his career. At 6'7" with a 7'0" wingspan, Lewis has good size and length for an NBA wing. He is a little slight though, and could benefit from adding some strength. He's a great athlete, using his quick twitch to beat defenders off the dribble, and his explosiveness to finish above the rim. He has the ability to create for himself and score at multiple levels. He hit 35% of his 3s in college and in the G-League as a rookie, which is solid considering a good amount of them are off-the-dribble, self-created looks. Lewis' playmaking for others could use a lot of work. He isn't a natural passer, as scoring is his first instinct most of the time. He had a negative assist to turnover ratio in college, and an even one in the G-League as a rookie. Defensively, Lewis has a long way to go to become a positive defender at the NBA level. His lack of strength will hurt him against bigger wings, and force him to mostly defend guards. He isn't always attentive on defense, not making the right rotations or losing his man off-ball. He can use his athleticism to get some steals and blocks, but often gambles and gets out of position. Lewis will still only be 22 years old as a potential free agent in 2025. He has some real skills and some physical gifts, but needs to round out his game more to become someone that NBA teams can rely on to contribute on a nightly basis.

Summary

Lewis' $2.2 million salary for 2025-2026 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Lakers will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so, as his contract doesn't fit within the minimum salary exception as it was a four-year contract. If Lewis becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If Lewis is waived and clears waivers, his value will likely have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum.

Cap Considerations

Caleb Houstan (3rd year non-guaranteed contract not waived, 2024) Malachi Flynn (1 year minimum, non-guaranteed 2024) Keon Johnson (2-1 year minimum, partially-guaranteed, 2024)

Player/Contract Comparison

Potential Teams: Lakers, Pistons, Magic, Raptors, Cavaliers

Predicted Contract: Not waived: $2.2 million
If waived: 1-year, $2.3 million (non-guaranteed) with the Pistons
