2025 Free Agents - Moses Moody
When Moody was drafted 14th in the 2021 NBA Draft, he was seen as a "good at a lot of things, not great at anything" kind of player. Someone who had a good chance of being a high-level role player, but maybe not someone with star potential. He has a good frame at 6'6" with a 7'1" wingspan, which allows him to guard multiple positions. He has some ball skills, but isn't someone that you want having a high usage or would expect to be the driver of high-level offense. He also isn't that athletic to the point he would be putting a lot of pressure on the rim for defenses. Moody has been pretty efficient so far in his career, shooting 37% from 3 and posting a good 58% true shooting overall. He has shown the ability to score at all three levels, as he can get to his midrange either attacking hard closeouts or in brief isolation situations. Moody has also finished pretty well at the rim, showing craft to finish around defenders since he won't typically finish over them. He also gets a good amount of offensive rebounds. Moody's minutes just haven't been that consistent, to the frustration of many Warriors fans that think he should play more. Free agency is a difficult game in today's NBA, and it seems more important than ever for players to get themselves traded to a team that values them in order to get paid, rather than having to rely on signing with a new team in free agency. It will be interesting to see how the '24-'25 season goes with Moody, and how much playing time he gets for the Warriors.
Summary
Moody will be a restricted free agent with an $17.4 million cap hold, an $8 million Qualifying Offer, and full Bird rights. I wouldn't expect Moody's QO to come into play, but I wouldn't completely rule it out considering it may not be that much lower than his market value starting salary and the Warriors could play hardball with him as a restricted free agent. There's also a chance that the Warriors don't even give him a QO, which would make him an unrestricted free agent. Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Moody as even teams without cap space could use the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or possibly even the Taxpayer MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him to an offer sheet or outright as an unrestricted free agent (although you rarely ever see offer sheets for less than the full MLE). However, Moody being a restricted free agent would lower his interest among teams, as they will worry that the only way to pry him away from Golden State would be to overpay him.
Cap Considerations
Talen Horton-Tucker (2+1 years, $31 million, 2021) De'Anthony Melton (4 years, $35 million, 2020) Aaron Nesmith (3 years, $33 million, 2023)
