2025 Free Agents - Kelly Oubre

Oubre's struggles in '20-'21 with the Warriors were well-documented, as he started out ice cold from three and just never really fit in with how they wanted to play. While he played slightly better as the season went on, he still finished with only a 32% hit rate from three. To make matters worse, he didn't shoot well from anywhere else on the court, other than being slightly-above at the rim, according to Cleaning the Glass. Thus his 50% eFG% was well below average.  With Charlotte, Oubre shot a little better at 33% from three, but he did so on high volume, and he overall can get hot and swing games. He has also taken fewer midrange jumpers, and since he didn't excel in that area, it has helped his overall efficiency. Oubre had a really hot start to the '23-'24 season for the 76ers, but cooled off a bit as the season went on after missing some time with an injury suffered from being hit by a car, and finished the season at 31% from three. Oubre is an athletic wing that can score at multiple levels and do so off the catch and off the dribble. His athleticism and willingness to run makes him a solid transition player, which he has been able to take advantage of in Charlotte. However, Oubre has never been the most cerebral player, and that particularly came to light in Golden State, as he didn't learn how to fit in to the high-IQ, ball movement-heavy offense that the Warriors like to execute.  Oubre's long wingspan makes him disruptive on defense, as he has consistently posted good steal and block rates. However, he has never focused enough on that end to be a legitimate defensive talent. He did have some good moments on that end in the 2024 playoffs. Oubre is a solid wing that has some positional versatility. He's probably overmatched as a starter on a good team, but can be a solid 6th-8th man, and you can never have too many wings.

Summary

Oubre has a $8.4 million player option for '25-'26, and if he opts out he will be an unrestricted free agent with a $10.4 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. Since the 76ers will be operating over the salary cap, they will retain Oubre's Early Bird rights until he is re-signed or signs elsewhere, so his cap hold is not really relevant. The 76ers could offer Oubre a starting salary of up to $14 million using the Early Bird exception, which will probably be enough should they wish to bring him back. For other teams, if Oubre demands a starting salary of more than the full $14.1 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him, unless a sign-and-trade is worked out. However, it's likely that Oubre could be had for the full MLE or slightly less, including maybe the Room MLE. It's unlikely he would sign for the Taxpayer MLE or less, because that is less than his player option.
