2025 Free Agents - Chris Paul

After finishing 5th in MVP voting and leading the Suns to the Finals in 2021, Paul had another strong season in '21-'22 as the Suns ran away with the best regular season record on the way to a 64-win season. However, after a couple disappointing playoff series losses, Paul was traded, and did not make a significant impact with the Warriors . At 39 years old, Paul is probably a the stage of his career where a serviceable game-manager during the regular season, but not a true difference-maker. Paul can still get to his spots on offense, and thus can be a reliable go-to option late in games. He'll make the right plays on both ends of the court, as he led the league in assists in '21-'22 and has always posted a low turnover rate. Paul isn't someone that will actively hurt you on days where his shot isn't falling, as he can find other ways to impact the game.  Paul hardly ever gets to the rim anymore, and only hit 46% of his shots there in '22-'23, by far a career low, and the sample size is more shocking as he averaged fewer than 0.5 rim attempts per game. In '23-'24 he attempted 15 shots at the rim in 58 games. His outside shooting numbers are still solid as he hit 38% from three and 48% from midrange in '22-'23, which is still very good but not elite like it has been historically. Those numbers were also down in '23-'24 to 35% and 46%, respectively. He also still has plenty of foul-drawing tricks to get to the line, although his free throw rate has decreased in recent years. Defensively, Paul is still a good defender due to his awareness and basketball I.Q. He has really good hands to get strips and deflections, as his steal rate over the past couple seasons has been near the top of the league for his position, according to Cleaning the Glass. Even with his lack of height at 6'0", Paul has always played bigger than his size, and does a good job of getting into the body of shooters to make them uncomfortable when trying to simply shoot over him. Paul will already be 40 years old as a free agent in 2025, so he may even consider retirement after the '24-25 season.

Summary

Paul will be an unrestricted free agent with a $12.6 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the Spurs could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $12.6 million. If that is not enough, the Spurs could use cap space, if they operate under the cap, or their Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, if they operate over the cap, to re-sign Paul if he demands more than $12.6 million.  Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Paul as even teams without cap space could possibly use the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's possible he could be signed for the minimum, if it's the right situation.

Cap Considerations

Russell Westbrook (1+1 year minimum, 2024) Tyus Jones (1 year minimum, 2024) Al Horford (2 years, $20 million, 2022)
