2025 Free Agents - Duop Reath

After several seasons playing overseas in Europe, Asia, and Australia, Reath signed a two-way contract with Portland in 2023. He actually got a decent amount of playing time in '23-'24, and played well enough to get a standard contract. Reath is a 6'11" big man that can stretch the floor, hitting a solid 36% of his 3s in '23-'24 on just over 3.5 attempts per game. He can operate as a pick-and-pop big, or spot-up in the corners. He isn't all that explosive athletically, and has only hit 67% of his shots at the rim, a below-average number for a big. Defensively, Reath has some laterally mobility, but isn't someone you want switching out onto the perimeter. He's better in drop coverage where he can hang near the rim. Reath will already be 29 years old as a potential free agent in 2025, so he's not a young prospect. However, I would expect him to still improve with increased NBA experience, and could carve out a career for himself as a solid back-up center. I would be surprised if he actually hits free agency in 2025, and would expect the Trailblazers to retain him.

Summary

Reath's $2.2 million salary for 2025-2026 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Trailblazers will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so, as his contract doesn't fit within the minimum salary exception as it was a three-year contract. If Reath becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If he is waived and clears waivers, it's likely he will only have minimum offers, and may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.

Cap Considerations

Nick Richards (3-1 year, $15 million, 2022) Jaylin Williams (3rd year of 4 year minimum contract picked up, 2024) Charles Bassey (1 year minimum, 2024)

Player/Contract Comparison

Potential Teams: Trailblazers, Knicks, Wizards, Pelicans, Grizzlies
