2025 Free Agents - Nick Richards
Richards didn't get any meaningful minutes with the Hornets during his rookie season in '20-'21, but he did average 17 points and over 10 rebounds per game during his nine G-League games, so he was productive in that regard. In '21-'22, he received little bit of time, but then really broke out as a legitimately productive backup center in '22-'23, and looks to have established himself as an NBA player. On offense, Richards is mostly limited to being a pick-and-roll finisher right now, but has shown some flashes of decent touch on his jumper that suggests he could someday stretch the floor a bit. He's a beast on the offensive glass, as he has posted a double digit offensive rebounding rate each of the past three seasons. He gets a lot of put-backs off of those offensive rebounds. Richards has potential as a rim protector due to his length and leaping ability, and is becoming a more disciplined defender. He's not an elite rim protector though, but can be disruptive inside. He has posted a good block rate thus far in his career. I'm not sure Richards will ever be anything more than a backup center, but he has shown that he can work on his game and improve, and reliable backup centers can still be valuable even in today's NBA that sometimes devalues bigs. Richards will still only be 27 years old as a potential free agent in 2025.
Summary
Richards' $5 million salary for 2025-2026 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Hornets will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so. If Richards becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or possibly even the Taxpayer MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If Richards is waived and clears waivers, his value may have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum.
Cap Considerations
Andre Drummond (1+1 years, $10 million, 2024) Drew Eubanks (2-1 years, $10 million, 2024) Mason Plumlee (1 year minimum, 2024)
