2025 Free Agents - Jaden Springer
Springer was the 28th overall pick in 2021, but has yet to earn any real playing time. He didn't see a single minute of non-garbage time as a rookie, and only played 53 minutes of non-garbage time in his second season, according to Cleaning the Glass. He got a little bit more playing time in '23-'24, but still not much, and the 76ers traded him to Boston mid-way through the season. Coming into the draft, Springer was seen as a high-level athlete that had true defensive potential, and if he developed his outside shot more he could be really dangerous. However, he can't dominate defensively with his athleticism like he could in college. He has posted really good steal and block rates in his few minutes, but he hasn't show to be a true stopper. On offense, he has only hit 27% of his 3s in the NBA and G-League combined, and hasn't been effective from two either. His assist to turnover rates aren't very good either, so the playmaking worries that some people had about him coming out of college haven't been addressed either. Springer is still only 22 years old, so there's room for him to improve. However, most players that turn into anything will have shown something through their first three seasons, and Springer just hasn't yet. I'm not sure how much opportunity he'll have on the returning champion Celtics. If he doesn't get minutes once again, he may need to develop his game overseas or in the G-League before making another run at the NBA.
Summary
Springer will be a restricted free agent with a $12.1 million cap hold and a $6 million Qualifying Offer. The Celtics may not even give him a QO, making him an unrestricted free agent. With Springer's QO being above his market value, I expect them to not offer him the QO, even if they want to try to bring him back. Other teams will have multiple ways to Springer as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or possibly even the Taxpayer MLE or Bi-Annual exception to sign him to an offer sheet (although you rarely see offer sheets below the full MLE) or outright as an unrestricted free agent. He also could likely be signed for the minimum, and he may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Cap Considerations
Malachi Flynn (1 year minimum, non-guaranteed, 2024) Chuma Okeke (1 year minimum, non-guaranteed, 2024) Dante Exum (2-1 years, $6 million, 2023)
