2025 Free Agents - Jordan Walsh
As a five-star high school recruit in 2022, Walsh committee to Arkansas, joining future first round pick freshmen Anthony Black and Nick Smith. He had a pretty freshman modest season from a production standpoint, but he showed real flashes of being a potential good NBA role player, and performed well enough at the combine to get selected 38th overall by the Celtics. Walsh has a good frame at 6'6" with a near 7'2" wingspan. He has good lateral quickness and strength, so it's likely he'll be able to defend multiple positions in the NBA. He has pretty good explosiveness too, so he has real NBA athleticism overall. Offensively, Walsh plays hard and should be a good transition threat. He needs to improve from a shooting perspective to be a real offensive threat, and needs to improve his ball-handling and passing to be a threat with the ball in his hands. Walsh will still only be 21 years old as a potential free agent in 2025. As a fairly high 2nd round pick and someone that the Celtics seem very intrigued with, I would be surprised if he actually hit free agency in 2025, but if he continues to not get playing time, it could happen. He did not got any real minutes for the Celtics in '23-'24, and spent most of his rookie season in the G-League, where he was decently productive but not dominant. His 35% 3-point shooting on 240 total attempts was a good sign though.
Summary
Walsh's $2.2 million salary for 2025-2026 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Celtics will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so, as his contract doesn't fit within the minimum salary exception as it was a four-year contract. If Walsh becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If Walsh is waived and clears waivers, his value will likely have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum.
Cap Considerations
Josh Minott (Not waived by 3rd year of 4-year 2nd rd contract, 2024) Brandon Boston, Jr. (1 year non-guaranteed minimum, 2024) Johnny Juzang (4 years, $12 million, 2024)
