2025 Free Agents - Cody Zeller

During the Kemba Walker years in Charlotte, the Hornets were often reliant on Zeller, as their disappointing seasons often coincided with Zeller being unhealthy. However, that might have been more about the backup options rather than the value Zeller provided. He has since bounced around a bit, but had some nice moments for the Heat in '22-'23. On defense, Zeller isn't a great rim protector but has pretty good help instincts and overall awareness to be in the right spot. He's not the most laterally-quick big, but he's not someone that is automatically toast if he has to switch onto a perimeter player either. Zeller generally makes the right plays on both ends. He's skilled enough to finish in pick-and-roll on offense. While he's started to shoot some 3s in recent years, he's hitting at a really low rate and teams generally do not respect him out there. When the defense sags off and Zeller tries to use that space to drive, the results have been mixed at best. Zeller isn't exactly a playmaker, and his touch on floaters is below-average. Zeller spent most of the '22-'23 season unsigned before signing with Miami late. He actually did get some playoffs minutes as their back-up center and finished well at the rim, but didn't really do anything that would separate himself from the abundance of other back-up center options out there. He has struggled in New Orleans in '23-'24, playing very few minutes and shooting a terrible 36% at the rim on a small sample size. I'm not convinced he would have gotten guaranteed money in the summer of 2024 if it wasn't needed in order to facilitate the DeJounte Murray trade.

Summary

Zeller's $3.7 million salary for 2025-2026 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Hawks will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so. If Zeller becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If Zeller is waived and clears waivers, his value will likely have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum, and he may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.

Cap Considerations

Tristan Thompson (1 year minimum, non-guaranteed, 2024) Mason Plumlee (1 year minimum, 2024) Alex Len (1 year minimum, 2024)

Player/Contract Comparison

Potential Teams: Hornets, Suns, Nuggets, 76ers, Bucks

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $3.6 million (non-guaranteed) with the Hornets
