About the Site

On-Off Basketball is all about learning about the game both on and off the court. This site is designed for hardcore NBA fans. Ones that are interested in all the intricacies of the game, and go beyond daily recaps and thoughtless hot takes. I want to educate, and be educated by, other smart basketball minds, and communicate about the league that I find so fascinating. I look forward to communicating with other NBA fans through the Discussion page of this site or direct replies to any of my articles.

As a lifelong basketball, I started to get interested in the management-side of the NBA in college. I would read articles about the NBA and wonder what Bird Rights or the Mid-Level Exception are. So I started to learn more about the salary cap and the collective bargaining agreement, and was excited when my university allowed me to make these the subject of my honors thesis, despite it being barely related to my major.

After publishing my thesis, I used the knowledge I obtained over hundreds of hours of salary cap and CBA research to interview with a top NBA agency. During this time, which spanned months from the initial conversation to the final interview, I learned a lot about that side of the business as well.

What you'll find in this site will be a lot of salary cap information. Many fans wonder "Why doesn't team X sign player Y?" or "Why doesn't team X trade player Z or player Y?", and many times the answer is "because they can't under the current rules", and hopefully this site will help explain those situations. In addition, this site will preview what teams can do, and what, in my opinion, they should do. You will also find predictive analysis, sometimes focused on gambling information (I spent some time and had some success in daily fantasy, but have stopped since moving to a state that doesn't allow DFS). And of course, you'll find analysis about interesting things happening in the NBA both on and off the court.
